On Monday, Squeaker goes back to school. His school had two events to get to know students and we attended both of them. He was not on his best behavior there, but I think his nervousness took over and he reacted to his nerves. We met his 3rd grade teacher and both of the special education teachers that will work with him this year. The special ed teachers seem wonderful and I’m hoping his 3rd grade teacher is also good, but I couldn’t get a read on her. I still need to email his teachers with things that will work as incentives for him. With the amount of work I’ve done to get ready for the school year for my students, I just haven’t had time. However, I think we’re ready. We’re off to another school year!
I still can’t believe my son’s going into the 3rd grade. He gets older and older, and it’s insane that he’s turning 9 this year. He’s matured so much over the past year. I see him making more and more good decisions, cooperating more, and adjusting to new situations better. His motto lately has been “I can handle it.” And he’s handled everything so well. I believe that, given the right amount of push to succeed, he’ll do really well this year.
The thought of another school and learning how to handle new people scares me a little. I think I had a really good relationship with his old teachers and now we’re starting over with new teachers, a new school, and a different school district. They do believe that he should go into more of his regular ed classes, which I think is really good. He had 140 minutes of time outside of the classroom, which is almost half of his day, and they believe he can do more time in the classroom. The goal is to get him ready for end-of-grade testing, but my goal is to have him socialize more with his peers.
So, I think we’re pretty much ready for him to start school again. We’ve spoken to his teachers, gotten most of his supplies (even though the list was insane), and purchased new clothes for him to wear. I’m hoping he starts the year off right and shows more growth this year. Backpack pictures will show up on my Instagram account on Monday! Here’s to another school year!
