Today, when I picked up Squeaker, he was wearing a Chewy Tube Necklace (affiliate link), a type of chewelry. His teacher told me he had a really good day until this afternoon, when it was just him and a little girl left waiting to be picked up. The little girl pulled out a puzzle to play with, and he wanted it, so he went into meltdown mode. He bit his knee. So, she tried this necklace on him, and he was receptive. She said that she explained to him that it hurts to bite ourselves and that he could bite the necklace instead. He tried it, and she had him look in front of the mirror at it, and he seemed to like it. When I went to pick him up, he demanded that it be taken off.
I told his teacher that I was kind of surprised he allowed her to put it on him. He hates wearing jewelry for any extended period of time. But, if he’ll do that and it’ll keep him from making marks on his skin, I’ll try it.
She said I could bring it home with me and we’ll just share it. So he’ll have it at school and at home. I know. One more thing to remember to pack in the morning. Hah. But I’m gonna give it the ol’ college try.
I had my first opportunity to use the necklace this afternoon. I was at a friend’s house and Squeaker went into meltdown mode again. He went for his knee, and I stopped him and put the necklace back on him. He put it in his mouth and actually calmed down. It was odd. I didn’t think it would work. Unfortunately, his moodiness tends to vacillate, so he threw a fit more mini-fits before we left. We got through it and started to drive home.
And he was upset because he didn’t see The Manager’s car at work, so that really threw him off. I had to remind him a few times about the necklace. But we made it through this evening without him leaving any marks on his skin. I consider that a victory. Anyone else use this “Chewelry” stuff?
What also helps? Things that squeak. Like this video that he insisted on watching again tonight, after watching it at least 10 times in a row last night…
The squeaking is at the end. Enjoy!
