My son’s voice was conflicted this morning on the way to before school care. First he told me he hated school, then he got excited about going to 2nd grade, and then he didn’t want to go, and then he finally told me that he wanted me to take him to school. The first day of school made him more nervous this year than ever before.
What a big adjustment for him, going to the second grade and going into a bigger classroom. On top of that, he’s used to me dropping him off at school and walking him in every morning. Instead, he would go to before school care and the bus would take him to school. Mom wouldn’t walk him in to school anymore, but his teacher would. Instead of being in a separate classroom most of the day, he goes to regular classes more often than not.
You know what, though? My son cares more about me not dropping him off than anything else. He expressed excitement about going to the 2nd grade and the regular classroom. He looked forward to meeting his teacher. He said he felt that his favorite subject would be science.
At the end of the day, he came home saying he had a good day. And he had his struggles today, as we knew he would, but the school is working with him on him achieving his goals of becoming more independent in the classroom. He’ll get there eventually. We’ll just keep working at it.
