Your kids are your top priority, but spending quality time with them can be a challenge. Sure, you may be with them a lot, but work, household chores, and other distractions can get in the way of really connecting with your children.
With so much on your plate, how can you spend meaningful time with your children? Here are some creative ideas that will help to foster a deep connection between you and your little ones and make memories that will last a lifetime.
Spending Quality Time Together
Tablets, computers, smartphones, TVs; technology abounds in today’s world, and while it can certainly be beneficial, it also gets in the way of spending quality time together as a family.
Designate a screen-free period in your house. Dedicate a block of time where technology use isn’t permitted. During screen-free time, do something together as a family. Not only will you have the opportunity to bond, but you’ll also give your kids’ eyes a much-needed break from those screens.
Everyone eats, so why not make preparing your food a family affair? Invite your children into the kitchen and let them take part in cooking. Encourage them to help make a menu for dinner, for example, and let them be your little sous chefs. Teach them how to dice, chop, puree, saute and everything else that’s involved with preparing a meal.
Cooking together offers so many benefits for your kids. It teaches them a valuable life skill, encourages healthy eating habits and gives your family a great opportunity to bond.
Instead of watching TV or playing video games, pull out a book and read together as a family.
Reading is good for kids in so many ways. It builds their knowledge, fosters their creativity, encourages language development and higher level thinking; plus, it’s a great way to strengthen your relationship.
Whether it’s a camping trip, kayaking, or just taking a walk around the neighborhood, getting outside and exploring nature is a great way to bond with your kids.
Investigate different plants and animals, talk about the things that you see and just enjoy being out in the fresh air together and away from all of the distractions. You’ll teach your children to appreciate nature and you’ll have the chance to really connect with them.
Pull out some arts and crafts supplies and let your creativity run wild. You can make structured crafts, or you can do some open-ended art where everyone can create whatever their imaginations can think of. It’s incredible what you can make with some paper, paint, scissors, glue and other basic art supplies; and not just artwork, but an incredible bond.
Have a family game night. Pull out a deck of cards, some board games, or make up your own games. You can teach your kids some valuable skills while playing games, such as counting and word-recognition; and of course, you’ll have the chance to giggle and be silly without any distractions getting in the way.
You don’t have to do something elaborate in order to spend quality time with your kids; as long as you are all doing something together and are focused on each other, you’ll cultivate a strong family bond and make memories you’ll cherish forever.
