The previews? Awesome. Funny. Great at creating hype. But for all they did to create the hype, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Movie was overrated. Warning, this review will contain spoilers! Turn back now if you do not want to know key details about the plot of the movie!
I know, I know. Everyone loves the Ninja Turtles. I do too! The producers of the movie did a great job giving life to the personalities of the Turtles. I appreciated the characterization of them. I would say that’s my only real praise for this movie. I loved hearing Leonardo, Michelangelo, Raphael, and Leonardo talk throughout the whole movie. They got their personalities dead-on. As always, Michelangelo was my favorite!
Shredder, though? Man, that dude had way too much armor. In the other movies and in the show, Shredder didn’t need super-armor. He relied on his ninja skills to fight the turtles and stood as a formidable foe without a suit of armor. I’m disappointed that the movie outfitted him in armor with blades and fancy tricks that allowed him to cheat and literally crush a turtle’s shell. Talk about animal cruelty!
I had hoped beyond hope that this movie would be okay for my children. I know it was rated PG-13, but I didn’t realize it would go the way of Batman in violence. My husband took the unwise advice of other parents who had taken their children to see the movie. Thankfully, my children weren’t even interested in watching the movie. Paint on the wall seemed to interest them more. The unnecessary roughness with the turtle-shell crunching, the near-death experience that Splinter experienced, and the hostage-crisis in the subway, all at the hands of the foot clan and Shredder. Explosives and guns were used instead of real ninja skills. I guess Shredder realized neither he nor his Foot Clan had any real skills?
I longed for a fair fight somewhere in the movie, but it never happened. In fact, the only way for Turtles to survive this movie was with an overdose of adrenaline while blood got drained mercilessly from their bodies.
In the end, I guess you could say the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles stuck with their phrase “Turtles Fight With Honor,” but no one else did. It’s a stretch to believe that they would win such a battle, but then again…well, I guess you’ll see how that all shakes down.
