Sometimes you get dealt a hand of cards that you never realized you’d have to deal with. When Mary McAlary went to the doctor’s office and was told that by the doctor to prepare for life in a wheelchair, she felt shocked. She ate healthy foods, exercised, and never smoked, and yet, she got this news that her life would change forever–she had Multiple Sclerosis. In The Fighting Spirit: The Art of Winning Your Fight by Mary McAlary and George Foreman III, the first of what will become a series of books called Everyday Fighters, Foreman and McAlary piece together Mary’s fight against the doctor’s negative, dismal prognosis.
One of the most fascinating aspects of the book for me, as a parent going through a diet change with my family, was Mary’s discovery that changing her diet would change her entire life. She becomes a Naturalist, changes her own diet, and then begins to advocate for others to do the same. The story simply amazes me, and I feel inspired and renewed in my resolve to continue doing what we’re doing for our children. The role that diet has on our health astounds me, but what astounds me more is how much people downplay it. Books like this–where the course of people’s lives change forever–prove to me just how changing your diet can change your life. You’ll need to read the book to find out the details, but I’m amazed. I’ll leave it at that.
One of my favorite things about this book are the quotes interwoven between the pages. I find them inspirational and I even used a couple of them as some of my whiteboard quotes that I put outside my door to inspire my students during the day. I also like the links provided throughout the book to give information to other patients about potential side-effects to medications, information about MS, and tips for staying healthy.
I found this book inspirational and feel that anyone struggling with a health problem could find it life-changing. Even if you’re not, if you’ll looking for tips for staying healthy or inspiration, this book has both. I’m left with several take-away tips for maintaining good health thanks to reading The Fighting Spirit.
